Detroit, MI

A quick visit to Detroit in November 2008 brought me to Atlas Global Bistro, where we went two nights in a row because it was so delicious!

I was visiting Wayne State University School of Medicine. Their Aesculapian group put together an orientation guide to Detroit including the following gluten-free information:

Wheat sucks and so does Celiac disease, but its easy to live gluten-free in Detroit. Trader Joes in Royal Oak has a decent array of gluten-free breads, pastas and the like for good prices (Woodward Ave, just north of 11 mile). Whole Foods in Troy also has an even better selection but runs a little more pricey (15 mile and Coolidge). Avoid the "health foods" sections of Meijer, Kroger and other area grocery stores unless you want five dollar bags of pretzels. For dining out, P.F. Changs at Somerset mall has a GREAT gluten-free menu (download at http://www.pfchangs.com/menu.shtml), Sizzle n' Spice is located downtown just off Woodward and serves great, cheap Indian food. Bel Cibo Bistro is an all gluten-free restaurant/deli with GF pizza, sandwiches and sides (and GF beer soon!), located at Main St. and 14 mile. Finally, for last-minute study food at the school, there is a Wendy's in the lobby of Harper Hospital where you can always eat the fries, baked potatoes, chili and frosties!
For other places to eat, the urbanspoon has a database of GF restaurants: http://www.urbanspoon.com/t/19/1/Detroit/Gluten-free-friendly-restaurants
Notably, GF Cucina's is entirely gluten free and is within the Detroit area: http://www.gfcucinas.com/
For gluten-free pizza, head to Crust Pizza: http://www.crustpizza.net/
Support and up-to-date information can be found at the Tri-County Celiac Support Group site: http://tccsg.com/index.htm
